The Last Devil to Die
by Richard Osman
Returning to our pals at Coopers Chase for the fourth time in ‘The Last Devil to Die’ is like catching up with old friends—witty, sharp, and endlessly endearing. Richard Osman once again delivers a compelling mystery wrapped in humor, warmth, and deep emotion, making this installment the most poignant yet.
When an old friend of the Thursday Murder Club is murdered, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim are drawn into a dangerous case involving stolen drugs, dodgy antiques, and international criminals. As they unravel the mystery, Elizabeth faces her own personal heartbreak—the inevitable loss of her beloved husband, Stephen. With the stakes higher than ever, the gang must rely on each other to solve the case while navigating their own grief and fears.
This book felt much faster-paced than ‘The Bullet That Missed’, keeping the suspense and tension high from the very start. The central mystery is gripping, but what sets this book apart is its emotional depth. Stephen’s final moments are written with such care and tenderness, reminding us that while Elizabeth is formidable, she is also a grieving wife. It’s easy to forget that behind her sharp mind and MI5 background lies a woman experiencing profound loss, and Osman handles this beautifully.
Ibrahim’s character arc is also given more space to shine, and it’s a joy to see him develop further. As always, Joyce steals every scene she’s in—her diary entries remain a highlight, and her charm is impossible to resist.
With a long wait until September for the next installment, I already miss my friends at Coopers Chase. Osman has created something truly special with this series, and I can’t wait to see where the gang goes next.
