All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
5.0
Really lovely. So lovely that I can't even put it into words without fearing mine won't do it justice.
Although I found this book gripping and engrossing, the plot is a little slow going, particularly in the beginning. Luckily for those of you with short attention spans (like me), the chapters are very short and alternate character points of view, and, every few chapters, the setting alternates as well. Helped keep me going whenever there was a slower part--although the slow parts are often the most beautifully-written.
If you're expecting a novel with tons of war or tons of romance...you won't find it. I think even young adult readers could enjoy this one (The Book Thief is a good gauge).
For those who like:
magical realism, interconnectedness, France, Germany, radio, Jules Verne, father-daughter relationships, brother-sister relationships, WWII, war, birds, treasure hunts, legends, beautiful covers, gorgeous prose, and rereading hauntingly exquisite passages over and over
Feels similar to:
The Book Thief, Middlesex, The Golem and the Jinni, The Night Circus
