Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli
DID NOT FINISH: 0%

If I had to hear about her grandma’s SA one more time presented as if it was a character trait of the FMC I was going to lose it.

I don’t know how this can be YA, I would not have wanted teenager me to read this. It seems that just because the CONSTANT SA happens to older women it’s okay. Part of the worldbuilding is that suspected witches are stripped down and assessed by leering men for scars, the ripped clothes, naked women, and violent men were ruminated on constantly & gratuitously.

A lot of things in this book do happen to teens in real life: SA, drinking, living independently, physical violence, debating marriage prospects, but the difference here is these are not dealt with in a chicken soup for the soul kind of way in this book as if for a teenage audience, not even a thirteen reasons why way, it’s all for the fantasy worldbuilding and really clunky in my opinion.

Also this did actually feel like a cat and mouse situation because he was/is so one dimensional in his hatred based on past trauma and she is quite passive and forgiving. And we get right back to the SA as s*xual manipulation is a part of their “romance”.

Read via audio and there were no content warnings. Again why/how is this YA.
