It is what it is. A war story, describing a non-nuclear World War III, if it had happened in 1988. Tense, gripping, technical combat scenes, fast-paced, well thought out plotting, and interesting perspectives on what combat does to decision-making. This, for my money, is far and away Tom Clancy’ best book. He doesn’t even pretend to care about character development or nuance. Which is good, because he sucks at those.
(What it isn’t, therefore, is one of his bloated, sexist, wish-fulfillment fantasy books like the last 40+ Jack Ryan novels. Literally no one knows how many of those he ended up publishing. It’s impossible to tell. Don’t read any of those after Sum of All Fears.)
Red Storm Rising is fantastic.
