20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and other Classic Novels
by Jules Verne
An interesting adventure novel which often reads like a marine biology textbook. If it had been written 30-40 years later it could have looked for the Titanic under the sea. Or Amelia Earhart's plane. I don't think I have read a book with so many exclamation points! It truly is an intriguing premise, what if you had an unstoppable ship that could cruise under water to the deepest depths around the world in 8-9 months. Verne must have done a tremendous amount of research to write this book. Lots of mysteries though. Why is Nemo so bitter about humanity and what happened to his family? What language do the crew speak? Are the crew all pescatarians? Where did the crew come from (one was apparently French)? What did they agree to when they signed up? How far is a "league?" What eventually happened to the Nautilus? Is there a sequel?
