Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life by Arnold Schwarzenegger
5.0
I just finished reading this, and I'm in tears. It is a rare, rare thing to look up to someone your entire life and not have them let you down. That's not to say Arnie hasn't made his mistakes over the years, but he openly accepts responsibility for them. He has never stopped apologizing, and in a way that is humble yet inarguable.
With a personality as big as his, fame as enormous as he had, and then becoming the Governor of one of the most influential states in the country...he's spent most of his life as a powerful and wealthy man, and yet, he's still entirely down to earth.
He doesn't shirk his achievements. He stands proudly in them, all that he's done, and so should we all. This book does give excellent life tips, and he's more than willing to share his journey, successes, and failures along the way to give you real examples. The fact that he is spending this last chapter of his life giving back is something I'm grateful for, something I aspire to.
It was also affirming in many ways. YES! I'm doing this the way Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing this. YES, some rules are meant to be broken. Then there are some harsh truths...reminders I'm not doing all I can to be and do what I want. Those truths aren't for everyone, but they lit a fire in my belly and reminded me of something I've only discovered in the past few years - it's about the journey, not the destination.
Thank you for writing this, Arnie, and thank you for being simultaneously bigger than life and still a regular person.
