The Final Gambit
by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
adventurous
lighthearted
mysterious
fast-paced
I did enjoy the new family lineage wrinkle this installment added, but overall I felt the ending to such an immense build up was seriously anticlimactic. Also, the “undercover double agent” was so obvious throughout the story, I thought it had to be a red herring. Moreover, I felt this book’s plot completely undermines all the reasons established in the first two books on why Avery inherited this massive fortune… total letdown imo. In book 2, I felt Grayson made huge strides in character development after the loss of Emily just for this book to completely reverse all of it with little to no payoff. Lastly, as glad as I am that Max’s appearances were brief in this book (reducing some of the most cringey dialogue I have ever read to a minimum) it completely eliminated a fun subplot of a budding romance between her and Xander, which was the only remotely enjoyable aspect in an otherwise pointless character.
