Okayyy so, I had written out these short, but detailed, reviews of each of the ten stories in this collection explaining what I liked and how the themes of trauma, misogyny, capitalism, and bodily autonomy Bora Chung so expertly weaved by a clever mix of absurdist horror, surrealism and the occasional hints of science fiction and fantasy. Unfortunately I am a moron and accidentally deleted every single word of what I’d written and am now too irritated to bother re-writing or rethinking what I wanted to. Don’t have the time, don’t have the energy; so I’m just gonna TLDR it and say I liked it. A lot. For sure checking out more of Chung’s works.
And last but certainly not least, some specific praise for Anton Hur’s translation work. It’s the third time I’ve read his Korean-to-English translations and while I obviously cannot vouch for its quality or accuracy as a non-speaker, I can say that his prose was very accessible and readable for me as someone unfamiliar with Bora Chung’s works.
