As someone who likes the Grand Canyon as a casual hiker but knows nothing about the river guiding community, this was an absolutely fascinating read. I loved how the author went through relevant history of the canyon and the dam, weaving those seemingly separate stories together into a really interesting, comprehensive retelling. I definitely finished this book with a newfound respect for the river guides, environmentalists, dam engineers, park service employees, and the canyon itself.
My only complaint is that the author is very descriptive, leading to a slower pace. It took me a few chapters to really get into the book but I’m super glad I stuck with it.
