20th Century Boys: The Perfect Edition, Vol. 1 by Naoki Urasawa

4.0

Excellent.

I was hesitating in continuing reading after the first volume but glad I stuck with it through volume 2!

While volume 1 is mostly set up that whets your interest, volume 2 is when the story’s gears really start turning. The whole characterisation of Kenji’s sister is particularly what sold me on this story ; the ability and talent of the author really shines through as he paints a layered and very human character in the form of Kiriko, giving readers a general yet very strong sense of her personality in very few chapters, all while crafting, in parallel, a complex relationship between brother and sister and developing the character of Kenji. Truly impressed by what was achieved in so few pages.

The plot itself is, of course, another very strong point : beguiling, mysterious and intriguing, it hooks you and reels you in.

Looking forward to more!
