In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

4.0

I was really invested in this book and i was able to read it all in a day. I think the premise of the book is really interesting and draws you in as you know what is going to happen soon and you want to discover how the characters get there.

However from the blurb i thought that Dannie was going to be stuck in the future and the book would be set in that time period, instead that part is only a dream so we only get a glimpse of it for a couple pages. Im fine with it not being like this as the build up to that seen was what got me hooked to this book.

At first i wasnt really vibing that much with the characters. They felt very out of touch and i couldnt relate to them that much. They were rich and successful, going to fancy restaurants all the time, talking about food and wine, and it just made me feel like i was in a compleately different world from the characters.
However by the end i was connected and invested in Dannie and Bella, and instead admired how they were able to live such a fancy life.

However the characters i didnt really feel connected to were David and Aaron. I understand that we didnt learn that much about david to show how distant he is from Dannie to make the reasons for the break up to make sense. Tbh i wish we knew a little more about Aaron, i know Dannie was keeping her distance to try and stop her dream from happening but i feel like i barely knew him even though. he was in a lot of scenes.

the cancer diagnosis was quite sad and i was crying at the end. I think this book dealt with it in a touching way and showed the complexity of how the characters dealt with that situation.

The ending was very slightly underwhelming but i think thats because i went in with the misconception of the book being set in the future and we technically go in one big circle.
However i can appreciate the message this book gives about how life can change in ways you least expect and to be more spontaneous etc. I also like how even though we are essentially given the final chapter in the beginning there is still things that are revealed that make it fresh and not as predictable as it may seem. For example Dannie thinks (and the reader is lead to believe) that her and Aaron fall in love and they are a couple, but they actually get together because of grief as she never saw the whole story.

Mainly the high stars due to it being fast past and emotional
