The Overcoat
by Nikolai Gogol
Today, The Overcoat still feels incredibly topical as a searing indictment of late-stage capitalism; which I adore coming from a 19th century short story. In a world where people are often valued more for what they produce or their social status than for who they are, Gogol’s tale warns of the spiritual toll exacted by systems that dehumanize.
The ghost of Akaky is a powerful metaphor for those whose quiet suffering goes unnoticed, become erased by indifferent institutions. Gogol’s vision remains disturbingly relevant, a reminder that if society continues to prize hierarchy and output over empathy and humanity, we risk becoming ghosts ourselves.
