Normal People by Sally Rooney

5.0

Ouch. I really didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It was such an easy novel to get through, even though it hurt every step of the way. Salley Rooney's writing is so easy to fall into and Marianne and Connell are so complex that you can't help but get wrapped up in their lives. I know many people found this to be frustrating because so much could be made easier for the characters if they just communicated, but honestly? I think that's the magic of the story. It's never just that simple. I think this is one I'll be coming back to a lot. It feels safe between the pages of this book, and I really, really loved it.

I also do this thing where I read books and associate them with songs in my mind and I thought it would be worth mentioning what songs I associate with Normal People. First off, Lonely Shade of Blue by Nick Leng is the saddest song ever and basically sums up how this book sits in my mind. Oomingmak by the Cocteau Twins is whimsical and eery but also painful and confusing, and I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to it without thinking of this book. And finally, You've Been Flirting Again by Björk just has those vibes. This is all completely irrelevant but if you give them a listen I think you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
