Ruinsong, by Julia Ember

This book is apparently a Phantom of the Opera retelling, which I did not know going into it. I don’t dislike The Phantom of the Opera, I’m just not too familiar with it and felt like having a more intimate knowledge of the source material would have made this book more enjoyable. The pacing seemed really slow to me, most of the action happens in the finally quarter of the book. Overall, it was a good easy read, and I did enjoy it. I give it 3.5/5 for the slow pacing as it did make the narrative kind of drag. I think the best thing about this novel is the magic system which I was very intrigued by. Not mad I bought it, not mad I read it, so in 2020, I’ll take the win!
