When She Returned
by Lucinda Berry
Boy oh boy do I love me some cult stories. The psychology behind cults is fascinating and I truly can never get enough. Just the general subject matter (a woman who is involved with a cult and then the aftermath of her return to her previous life) made me predisposed to enjoy this book, so if you aren't interested in cults or anything like that, you could probably skip this one. It doesn't get too much into the actual psychology, but it is a nice light look into that mindset and the aftereffects.
I'm torn on how to rate this because I genuinely did enjoy this book and it's ultra readable, but the ending was fairly predictable and honestly, a lot of the characters act EXTREMELY stupid throughout the story. Scott and Meredith definitely need to get into couples counseling and the way the end tidies everything up neatly really makes what they went through......irrelevant. The poor choices of those two didn't really dampen my enjoyment of the story though because again, I'm ultra into anything with a cult, but I definitely had my moments where I had to suspend disbelief and say, okay sure that's the worst possible reaction but whatever it's fine, and move on.
I didn't even realize until reading other reviews that a lot of people don't like the 'Then' plot line. That was basically my favorite bit. I didn't find it boring at all and honestly the events in this part seemed more logical than what happened in the 'Now'. Here I could excuse any poor choices (even if I didn't really get it) because duh, cult.
