The Devotion of Suspect X
by Keigo Higashino
"Which is harder: devising an unsolvable problem, or solving that problem?"
The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino is a remarkable page-turner which I found difficult to put down. Everything become more amazingly perplexing as I dive more into the story.
The events in The Devotion of Suspect X centered around Yasuko, a divorced single mother who had her life turns upside down when her abusive ex-husband, Togashi turned up on her doorstep. A confrontation between them and Yasuko's daughter then led to the death of Togashi. Devotion of Suspect X also take on the narrative of murder investigation performed by Detective Kusanagi of the Tokyo Police and his friend, Yukawa who's also a physicist.
The book has an unusual approach where the preparator(s) were already revealed. The information on how the victim was murdered and seemingly disposition plan of the body were provided early on. Thus, the readers thought they can foresee everything based on the information but they won't see what's coming.
Not only The Devotion of Suspect X is packed with the mystery of 'why?' & 'how?', it also tinkered with the physiological aspect by exploring the emotions felt by the characters. Considering the author's background in engineering, the elements of mathematics and physics in it also make it somewhat enjoyable to read. Those elements simultaneously provide more depth and connection to the characters. With that in mind, this is recommended not just for crime fiction and thrillers fan, but also highly recommended to anyone who's intrigued by the idea of mathematics blended into crime.
The Devotion of Suspect X offers a heartbreakingly poignant ending that had me cried a bucket of tears. This is the first book by Keigo Higashino for me and it certainly wouldn't be the last. His writing compelled me to the end.
"The world needs its cogs and even a cog may say how it gets used. In fact, only a cog may determine its eventual meaning in the system."
