5.0

Set in North Carolina in the 60s, this is beautifully written coming of age story with a murder-mystery twist to it.  After her drunken and abusive father causes her family to abandon her in the Marshlands they call home, this tory follows Kya as she is forced to survive alone. Outcast and tormented by the neighboring town, Kya seeks comfort in nature. This is where the authors life as a wildlife scientist really shines through, the setting is immersive and Kya's passion is all-encompassing.

Kya's character is so well developed. She is smart and resilient despite her traumas. But she is lonely and longing for love.

When Chase Andrews is found dead, suspicion falls on the 'Marsh Girl'. The story follows the devastating consequences of ignorance and prejudice.

While this is Owens' debut novel, she has previously won the John Burroughs Award for Nature writing and is the co-author of 3 internationally best selling non-fiction books.
