Kill Your Brother by Jack Heath

dark tense fast-paced

3.25

This was a decent "thriller" ... mystery with kidnapping, torture and murder. I grabbed it in the AudiblePlus catalog (only on Audible). There is NOT a Kindle copy, but it's available in paperback, and I found an ebook on Hoopla. There was a note "This book is based on the Audible Original. It has been expanded and revised for print and digital publication."  That was interesting, not something you see that often. I looked over the first couple chapters, and they seemed identical to the audio. Flipped through more (which I like to do before writing a review).

This starts off in the middle of the action, just drops you right into the story in the prologue. Now according to definitions, a prologue is usually BEFORE ... but this one is one of those where it shows you a scene from later, and then goes back and gives you background in the chapters - building up to that point.  In audio, it was apparent immediately that this was taking place in Australia. It did some up in the text too (but I always wonder how long it would take me to figure out the location).

3rd person/present tense. Elise is the MC, but we also get into the mind of a couple of the other characters (although NOT the brother in question).  There are also a few "memory" chapters, in past tense. I did appreciate the tense change/helps keep the time shifts straight.

As we are introduced to Elise, she's looking for her missing brother, and there are these hints dropped about her past. "The thing" that happened. She's had to change her look, people are after her. It's not a big/important reveal ... she was an athlete and caught doping and as she was representing the country, people were upset with her. I don't really think it mattered that much. It was just annoying how long it took to tell us. I guess there are reasons it's included, but a scene where her home is broken into and vandalized ... just yuck, and it didn't really add anything and seemed over the top.

A lot seemed too coincidental, and "really????" to me. Definitely things that would delve into spoiler territory ... mainly SPOILERS
Deere ... Mr. Hitman who advertises and is so easily hired for all your dirty deeds. It was pretty easy to figure out he'd set up Moon's suicide too. The guy gets around this small town. I was glad it didn't take Stephanie long to figure that out too. Stephanie seemed SO sure of other's guilt, when I don't know that there proof was really there? And to snap so easily into becoming a kidnapper/killer? It was good how WE, the reader, didn't know if Callum was guilty or not ... and does that make a difference? Does he deserve to die?

Not really the same, but I was reminded slightly of another Audible Original - Find Us by Benjamin Stevenson. A (young) brother/sister are presumed kidnapped. We follow a captor, and the victims, being held in a basement. There's a twist.

There was some proFanity (x20) and a warning that "there are some scenes that readers may find disturbing" ... there is violence, some sexual situations (including a lesbian couple).  The blurb does give a good representation of what to expect from the story.
