The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout

3.0

The whole book should have been just the last 100 pages, the rest was slow-paced and irrelevant. The characters seemed to lack personality and reduced to just a few traits.

Casteel: Turned on by Poppy being violent. Sarcastic. Poppy above all else.

Poppy: Stabby stab. Threatening to stab. Confusion.

Kieran: Asking Poppy to stop asking questions. Loyal. Sorta romantic but not.

Emil/Niall/Vonetta: Loyal. Friendly. Sarcastic. (They’re literally the same character).

Any royals/gods: Confusing warnings. Incomplete half-truths. Threats.

I just feel like all the characters had so much more depth to them in the second book. Poppy endlessly being confused about what she was literally 75% of the book and it made me strongly dislike her, which is unfortunate because I liked her a lot in the first two books. Cas’s only role is to simp for Poppy, he has no other drive besides her and not only is that unhealthy and dehumanizing, it makes him predictable and boring.

I had to force myself to read most of this book, while I devoured the other two, and the only reason I finished it was out of respect for the first two books.

The whole plot should have been centered around the ending, rather than all the uselessness that occurred literally the entire rest of the book. Very sad they killed Ian too, I wanted to get to know him.

Disappointed but hoping for a good fourth book because Poppy has hopefully FINALLY stopped being meek now that she’s embraced who she is (thank goodness). Interested to see what’s going on with Malik too.
