This book had great characters and featured family dynamics, found and by blood. There was tough subject matter of the Memphis Tennessee Children's home and the treatment of the kids they sometimes stole and the birth and adoptive parents they took advantage of.  I liked the two points of view, and how Avery uncovered the mystery of her grandmother's past, but was more drawn to the characters and story of the past. I felt some of the current-day storyline was overdone at times.
