I really loved this book as a follow up to The Space Between Worlds. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first, I think that was mainly because I felt I didn’t immediately connect with the main player characters like I did with Cara in the first. I loved having overlap of characters, but with new plot and struggle. It’s interesting because there is dialogue in the book itself about the usefulness of villain-hood and I really enjoyed how that made me reflect in real-time about how I was thinking about the characters. I think the point of that was that the people drawn initially as easy villains in this book (Adam, Cross at the beginning) are more complex than simply bad. And the people we grow most connected to end up embracing self-prescribed villain-hood by the end (Scales). I feel like there was more violence in this book, but I’m not sure if that’s entirely true? The other interesting loose string here was WHY are the dops from another world coming to conquer this one? We never really find out what is driving them to pounce on this version of the world. Overall I loved it!!
