Why only 1 star I hear you asking?

There are a few reasons but let's start with one of the big ones. She is a rape apologist. There is a chapter called Trust men in which she talks about some of the attempted sexual assaults and other ways in which men have treated her. Earlier in the book she also details how she was sexually assaulted as a child by her sister's friend. She then goes on to say that we should feel sorry for men, that we should understand that they can't really help it because of testosterone and urges etc.

I probably should have DNF it at that point but it is a short book and there was only 2 more hours to go.

Yes the audio is read by her and it is well done it is just the content of the book that is an issue

The other issue for me is that she seems completely unaware of her privilege. Throughout the book she begins and ends chapter with self help wisdom. There are a few good ones but mostly it came across as preachy and a bit tone deaf. You get things along the lines of, challenges in life can be turned into positives you just have to learn something from it and grow. Don't let it define you etc.

Goldie is a hugely privileged person. Even growing up her family were middle class. She had options and choices, she had support and love. Her life advice is from a women who has really not had much hardship in her life and I found it uncomfortable.

She has definitely done some great charity things. Those are brilliant, but there is also a tone of white saviour about them.

There is no real depth to this book. I know nothing more about her in any real way apart from that she has been very lucky and blessed. I don't think she is a bad person, she is a product of all that, she is just fairly unaware of it and is disappointing and does not make for a good book.
