My actual rating is 3.8/5. This book managed to cover a lot, and I really liked how it handled the intersection of fatness and Blackness quite well. Fat, Black women are often mistreated by medical professionals, who see their weight has the root of any issue they may have, and I think this book did great in portraying this with the appointment scene. I also think it did a relatively good job at portraying non-traditional relationships, such as QPPs and polyamory, for a teenage audience. The reason I gave this book 3.8 stars is the various pop culture references. I have seen many books do this, specifically other contemporary YA fiction novels, and never every time these references would pull me out of the story. This book had many of them, and while I know some people enjoy such easter eggs, it's just not for me.
But reading this book is like binge watching a show, I was about 40% of the way through and I planned on reading maybe 2 chapters before bed, and suddenly I was 80% done and it was midnight.
