Under the Dome by Stephen King
5.0
I wanted to read this book as soon as it was published. I finally bought it 3 years ago and it sat on my book shelf untouched until I finally got in the mood to read it. And I could kick myself hard for waiting all this time to indulge in this epic masterpiece.
From the very first sentence all the way to the last, this book did not let up. Not once. It took me a lot longer to get through it than I originally wished because I’ve since taken on a second job so my reading time has narrowed considerably but it never deterred me from wanting to continue reading. As I said, action from start to finish. Being one of King’s “behemoth” novels, this one did not feel like there were any slow burns whatsoever throughout (“It” and “The Stand” had their slow moments). Also, King wrote this in a different, unusual style. Instead of dividing the book up into different parts or books, he frames the story in many sections with each section containing its own mini-chapters. The cast is exceptionally large but very engaging and colorful.
I’ve heard and read reviews where many people don’t like the ending of this book. And while I can see where they may find it a bit abrupt or just meh I personally enjoyed it because it made me really appreciate everything that happened prior and made the experiences people had while under the Dome that much more tragic. Sometimes it isn’t about the ultimate outcome but the journey. And that to me is what this ending represented.
I’m giving it 5 stars. I absolutely loved this King novel. Highly recommend.
