Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

2.0

This was a comfort read. In a charming tea shop lies Hugo, a Ferryman, and Mei, a reaper, a caring duo that help the dead cross over. The story has a tongue in cheek quirkiness to it and the found family aspect is rather sweet, but it didn't have the same magic of the house on the cerulean sea.

The romance wasn't well constructed and felt forced. As others have pointed out, Wallace goes from being a total jerk to learning the error of his ways very quickly, so quickly that it doesn't seem authentic at all.

I think the pacing was also sometimes pretty slow. I spent some of the time glaring at the audible app thinking how could there still be so much left? I definitely think this could've been reworked to have more time for character development and less time for minor story lines that don't really add anything like the Desdemona one.
