Slightly Scandalous by Mary Balogh

This might be my favorite Bedwyn book. Freyja Bedwyn is a handsome woman, not beautiful, and she starts the book by punching the hero in the nose not once but twice. Joshua kind of deserves it, though — the first time he kisses her after bursting into her hotel room to escape from angry gents and gets bopped, then she thinks he’s accosting a woman she hears screaming in the park and gets bopped again. Their endless back-and-forth is a delight to read, with Freyja daring and bold and strong and Josh teasing and sweet and playful. He loves winding her up but also sees the deep heart and sensitivity that she tries to hide from everyone else, and that’s beautiful. Also there’s a not-so-fake engagement, Down’s syndrome rep, Bath tourism stops, an evil aunt, and a fake murder charge — what more could anyone want from a historical?!
