To Sir, with Love
by Lauren Layne
To Sir, With Love was extremely adorable, like a millenial's version of You've Got Mail.
Gracie Coopier (a very rom-comish name) is one of the three joint-owner of Bubbles, a champagne store that her parents had opened and the store that Gracie took over when her dad passed away. Gracie had dreamed of being an artist when she was younger but had decided to set those dreams aside when her father had asked for her help to run the business. As the middle child, Gracie has always been the peacemaker between her warring siblings and found it difficult to say no to her dad. Years later, Bubbles has been rebranded to Bubbles & More, with the more including some paintings and trinkets that Gracie has created. While this is somewhat of a creative outlet for her, it is also intended to supplement the income as the champagne store can no longer compete with online retailers.
These were already problems before Sebastian Andrews came sniffing around. Sebastian represents his own family's business, which in this case means buying over the store that Gracie's business is now occupying. While Gracie can't help but to find the man attractive, she resents what he represents and can only seek advice from her friend, a man whom he has never met and whom she has been falling for. And it's not difficult to figure out who this person is.
This story was really incredibly sweet. In particular, the text messages exchanged between Gracie and her anonymous Sir were so funny, cute and well-timed with the conflicts that she was having with Sebastian. Sebastian was also a truly decent person, not the caricature of a cut-throat businessman like what Gracie imagined.
To Sir, with bruised feelings,
Do you ever let a comment slip under your skin that shouldn't? The sort of jab that someone you don't even like that you should really brush off, but instead keeps you up at night because it...hurts?
Lady

My dear lady,
Given the hard-to-define nature of our correspondence, this is perhaps overstepping, but I confess my knee-jerk reaction to your note was to ask for a name and address of the offender. Duels are still a thing, right?
But alas, that would be a bit hypocritical of me. I too have been up at night, though not for something I heard but for something I said. A rash, spontaneous comment I wish I could take back.
Perhaps whomever hurt you feels the same regret? And if not, let me know about that duel...
Yours at dawn,
Sir.

"Hmm, okay, stop me when I get close," I say, taking a sip of wine. We both pretend to study the art as I begin rattling off the potential snags to their relationship. "You're gay. She's gay. She likes cats. You're a dog person. Opposing political views. One of you likes pineapple on your pizza, and the other thinks fruit on pizza's an aberration. She wants to summer in East Hampton, you in Southampton. You have a porn addiction. You have different tastes in china patterns. She falls asleep to whale noises, but you like silence and a night-light. There's someone else -"
His eyes flick over to me, just for a second, but it's unmistakably a tell.
"Ah," I say lightly, trying to ignore the way my heart irrationally soars at the realization he's single, only to tumble again at the realization that there's another woman in the picture. "Tricky."
