Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding
4.0

In-arguably, the most fun I have had this year in a book, I am surprised that I took such a long time to get a proper crack at this book. Cos once you start, the book is quite unputdownable. Retribution Falls is one in the increasing trend of books that are a counterpart of GrimDark. These books are GrinDark. Mostly involving a small group that jokes and takes nothing seriously, the characters are inherently massively flawed and have a very dark backstory and hence use humor as a very effective defense mechanism. Lies of Locke Lamora, Traitor's Blades are other books falling in this category.

The cast here is supremely dysfunctional with each character having flaws mile wide but yet, functioning by the seat of their pants following the lead of their charming and yet selfish captain. The story is a doozy, the cast interactions are fun and the action is a romp. Think of it like a novel version of the Guardians of the Galaxy. High Praise indeed and looking forward to the rest of the series.

Yes, there are flaws in the book and a big ol Dues Ex Machina to save the day but who cares. 4.5 rating rather than a 4
