Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

5.0

You know a book is a five star read when I read a 700 page book in 6 days.

The thing I love so much about any Cassandra Clare book is the characters and their relationships. While the plot is always super interesting, I keep coming back to these books because the characters are so real and relatable. Despite this being a fantasy series, the everyday struggles of being a teenager and trying to find your way in life are represented in such an honest way that I just can’t get enough of. Every single character made me feel such strong emotions (whether they be positive or negative), and I believe that to be the most important aspect of any book. I especially love the relationship between Kit and Ty, it’s just so wholesome and adorable.

I loved the representation in this book! Kit’s mundane view and understanding of autism is something I really appreciate from this book, as well as Diana’s coming out. These topics are handled so delicately, which I believe is key when dealing with topics as important as sexuality and autism. I also really enjoyed the discussion being started around the bigotry in the Shadowhunter world in the form of the Cohort, and how that relates to the real world.

I did not see the ending coming at all!! I just sat there staring at my book once I had finished, in complete shock and disbelief. I can’t wait to start Queen of Air and Darkness and see how the series will conclude!
