kooltotoro 's review for:
The Son
by Jo Nesbø
This is perfect 5 stars read for me. Absolutely brilliant! My first time reading a Jo Nesbø's book, and I became an instant fan.
I finished reading this amazing book exactly two months ago. However, I did not write a review then, as I was still so sad it ended that I was at a loss for words. I could not get into another book even if I tried hard to because I could not get this book out of my mind.
I always love a good revenge book and film. I love seeing the protagonist seeking a revenge that not only satisfies himself/herself and us, the readers and audiences.
This book was fast-paced, with never-ending thrills and excitement, a convincing yet not overdone romance, beautiful writing and amazing three-dimensional character development. The revenge was so violent, gruesome and brutal, described in great graphic details that it feels as though the readers were at that particular scene, watching every execution. And you know those are scenes you can imagine watching on the big screen. I was practically cheering, fist pumping and 'OMG-ing' throughout the more intense scenes.
Above all, the one thing that I love most about this book, was the multiple POV (point of view) of every single characters surrounding Sonny.
In "The Son", we do not see from Sonny's POV, not even a single moment. For any inexperienced writer, this may be a very risky task, as readers will not know how the protagonist feels and may not be able to connect with him/her. However, through Mr Nesbø's fabulous writing, we saw Sonny's every actions and thoughts, and were made to connect emotionally with him through the eyes of other characters.
Sonny is an awesome character. He is not perfect, nor is he drop-dead gorgeous (If this book were to be written by some other YA or Chick-Lit authors, I can 100% guarantee you the hero will be described as perfect). Nope, Sonny was just a normal thirty year old man-boy on the skinny side. He was a drug addict. The way he seeks revenge was sick, very sick and sadistic. However, through multiple perspectives, we can see he is definitely not a cold-blooded person. As readers, we see more. Not only do we see and feel the emotions of all the side characters, at the same time, we see the many sensitive and emotional sides of Sonny, portrayed throughout the book. Despite the things did, we can easily connect and sympathize with him, and cheer him on. This is definitely great writing on Mr Nesbø's part.
In regards to the side characters, I want to point out that Markus is yet another amazing character I will love to read more about.
The ending comes with some mind blowing twist that still left me wide eyed and reeling.
Last but not least, I must thank Mr Nesbø for writing such an amazing story. I love it so much. I love Sonny. Somehow, I felt this book was underrated and I hope more people will read and enjoy it too. :)
