Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen
4.0

4.5/5

This was such a fun read! Gina Chen’s writing felt, for lack of a better word, casual. It didn’t feel like an old timey fantasy despite being about prophecies, princes and the like. It felt like a fantasy set in a modern kingdom, primarily in the writing style and how the characters spoke. Like in what fantasy book do they say “making out?” At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. It took me about halfway through the book to really sink into the writing. Despite the high stakes of the story, I found myself laughing out loud.

The modern style of the writing made it so much easier to connect to the characters for me. The bickering, primarily between Dante and Cyrus felt like how my friends and I talk to each other. It also made the magic system easy to follow. A clear distinction between the fairies and the Fates existed, which made it easy to follow the different belief systems.

The romance was the only part that didn’t totally sell me. It’s hard to pin down a trope/tropes, but it was basically bickering to lustful allies. I liked Violet and Cyrus a lot more near the end, and can’t wait to see how the ending of book one is resolved in book two.
