City of Ashes
by Cassandra Clare
This was surprisingly more enjoyable than the first novel. Following the events of City of Bones, Clary learns more about her new world and grapples with love, friendship and family. Big bad Valentine makes an appearance and we are also introduced to the Inquisitor and the court of the faeries.
Whilst the first book was decidedly more slow-paced, City of Ashes was chock full of adventure. We learnt more about the world, particularly the intricacies of werewolves, vampires and faeries, as well as Clary and Jace's special abilities. Moreover, the book took us through new locations which enriched the world-building. I also particularly enjoyed the development of individual characters and their relationships with each other. Whilst I normally tend to be wary of love triangles a double love triangle features here which enriches the character development rather than making things predictable.
Overall I enjoyed this instalment better than the first and I look forward to picking up the next book in the series.
