The Reckoning by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir

Huldar is a detective who has recently been demoted from manager to "guy everyone makes fun of in the break room." He's only being assigned the simplest cases, which is why he's sent to investigate a note found in a school's time capsule from 10 years ago. Except it starts to look like Huldar's case is related to a big "found hands, missing body" case, so he might just get a chance to redeem himself. And screw up his love life in the process.

At first I found this book unusually exciting because it seemed to start Huldar in the middle of his story. Then I realised that of course it MUST be a sequel. Guess I have to go back and read "The Legacy" now.
