Salt Houses by Hala Alyan

This story follows different members of a Palestinian family through generations and it was interesting to get different points of views throughout the book. Sometimes, the pacing felt slow for me but I think that’s because of my flighty attention span. Some of the lines in this book was so beautiful and poetic and I liked the aspect of what feels like some of the mundane in a historical fiction lens. It makes these large historical events feel that much more real. It’s not just about what is read in text books or news article, but about real people. So yes, even though this book is fiction they feel real. A real, breathing family unit that expands your empathy. My history knowledge is not the best so sometimes I was a little lost, but maybe sometimes that was intentional that it wasn’t all about what you will read as news headlines but what events you are living through in the day to day.
