hm..... i've never read anything like this before and I appreciated the challenge. It was weird and gross and made me confront disturbing images that if I knew were in the book initially I probably wouldn't have read it. Buuuuut. idk. I didn't care for any of the characters. I felt no love or hate or sympathy or disdain for Marek, Jude, Agata, Villiam, anyone really. Ina was kinda chill. But it didn't matter to me what happened to them and I kinda wish it had. And maybe it's because my comprehension skills aren't the greatest, but I just don't know if I actually understand what this book is About. I kind of understood why the characters (specifically Jude and Marek) behaved the way they did with their guilt and shame and faith but only because it was demonstrated over and over again. Like Moshfegh just wrote that Marek hurt himself for God a bunch of times and I was like yeah ok I get it now. The writing was ok. I'm starting to think I don't like Moshfegh very much but I think I'll try out Eileen. I think the pacing was good and I liked how information was revealed, there was always something new happening and I appreciated that. I didn't hate this book but I didn't love it. I think a perfectly average 2.5 stars is appropriate here.
