The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias

5.0

Wow. Just wow. This book had me hooked from the beginning. It's like nothing I've ever read before. It's a mix of so many different genres and elements that make a captivating story: mourning the loss of a loved one, heartbreak from a broken relationship, questionable to bad to even worse decisions and the consequences of those, gangster sh*t, border culture, capitalism, the crushing weight of poverty, racism, religion, horror, action and adventure. This is a very f*cked up story that is told so beautifully and poetically that you don't know whether to cower in fear over what you just read or aggressively highlight passages that put words to emotions and cultural/political/societal/religious beliefs you've always felt with your whole soul, but never expressed in words. Major trigger warnings for this book, but you won't regret reading it. Iglesias is now (another) favorite author.
