Ocean's Echo
by Everina Maxwell
Thanks to the publisher, Tor, for the ARC of this book.
Ocean’s Echo is another great installment in the universe of Maxwell’s debut novel, Winter’s Orbit. If you like sci-fi, political intrigue, military action, and a hint of romance this story is for you. If you haven’t read Winter’s Orbit, that’s okay, you can absolutely start with Ocean’s Echo, and to be honest, I would start with Ocean’s Echo, I think it’s a better story. While this is a sci-fi, romance novel, the romance is not a fast burning, smutty mess, nor is it the primary plot. I would argue that the plot for Ocean’s Echo is even more engaging than Winter’s Orbit, as Maxwell takes her time in Ocean’s Echo to really explore the sci-fi technology and the impacts of that technology in her crafted universe. In some ways, the quality of the story reminds me of my favorite romance duo Ilona Andrews, in that the plot isn’t sacrificed to push the romance forward. So, if you enjoy Ilona Andrews I think Maxwell’s work is a great fit for you.
I felt much more connected to the two main characters in Ocean’s Echo than Winter’s Orbit. Both the main love interests are fleshed out and relatable. I also appreciate about Maxwell’s work, that even though this is a story about two individuals forced to exist together via potential mind control, they are wholly unique individuals and that doesn’t get lost even when they are synced. So often, in romance stories, love interests become this vanilla mess of sameness, and that doesn’t happen here.
I’m definitely looking forward to future installment’s in this world as it seems Maxwell is only getting better and better with her storytelling.
