The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton

4.0

3.5 stars.

An interesting but slightly depressing look into the world of pro cycling. Much of the book revolves around Lance Armstrong, even though it's supposed to be the story of Tyler Hamilton. I know Lance was a huge figure in cycling and in Tyler's life so he can't be avoided, but I felt at times like I was reading two separate biographies - and both of them were incomplete.

The culture around racing during Tyler's career was the depressing part. I came away with the feeling that nobody was clean and nobody in the cycling governing organizations really cared because they were getting exciting races and a lot of publicity.

I'd have preferred an inside look into how Tyler got interested in cycling and what the day-to-day life inside the peloton was like. But I'll have to find another book for that story.
