The Professor by Charlotte Brontë
3.0

I was really enjoying the beginning of the book and how the story started but Bronte is trying so hard to be "the man" in this book that it started getting weird. Grown, educated gentlemen are talking about women around them in such vulgar terms: they are dissecting their hair, bodies and features. They don't even forgive the students: which is perverted. William seems like an arse; him describing his students as "finely shaped, all curves and roundness" was sick. "Her noble bust heaved with her regular breathing." Umm excuse me?

Was it weird because a female author was writing all this? There was a lot of gender discrimination. The only thing good about the book was that at least: the female lead continued teaching after getting married.

Otherwise the writing was great. Some of the passages were heart warming.
There was also a lot of racism in the book. It got a little bit too much. I just could not be ok with it.
I'm happy my edition had translation of the French bits cause otherwise it would have been confusing.
