Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw
1.0

The only reason I finished this was because it was under 200 pages and I'm behind on my goal for the year. It's painfully flowery to the point that it's nearly impossible to follow what is actually happening. The characters are all awful, except maybe Lin. Everyone has baggage with everyone else but none of it is really talked about so you just read about these five friends who all hate each other and you don't understand why they're even spending time together. The action starts nearly immediately without much tension building and they all speak in a way no one would speak in a haunted mansion with a possessed friend. No one facing those actions is going to be thinking, much less saying, "they were there for me when you weren't."

This book made me actively angry. It wasn't as scary as it could or should have been, the characters are all detestable, and the prose is like a first year literature student is flexing their vocabulary on wattpad. Simile and metaphor should be used sparingly to enhance the story, not shoved into every sentence to try to prove cleverness or worse, just to make a word count goal.
