Compared to the film, the novel lacks substance and character. Where Sandra Bullock brings life to Mallory, the book often fails to portray her as little more than a vessel for her child. The exact nature of the unseen entities is even more unstable and undeveloped in the novel than in the film; while this lack of clarity serves to allow for a variety of interpretations, it ultimately falls short of compelling the reader to care enough to consider the possibilities. There were some inconsistencies and holes (such as Mallory driving in the beginning, Victor's insanity, etc.) that just didn't make sense. Overall, great concept with a potentially-interesting entity and angle that doesn't live up to its potential.
