When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone
4.0

Amazing insight on divine feminine worship in ancient societies, i really related to Stone’s musings on how many modern religious women yearn for this kind of connection. I also appreciated that the author is an artist who spent years searching for art depicting the divine mother, because SAME. it was written in the 70s so it’s a little dry, also I’ve heard that not all of the research holds up as well as it used to but that is common with books this old. I’ve done a lot of research on Judean Pillar Figurines and denotations of artwork depicting God the Mother in the Old Testament, and this helped scratch my itch. If you are interested in feminist theory in Judeo-Christian history and theology then this is a good resource. I’m the opposite of a historian though so don’t take my word for it.
