The Sea Wolf by Jack London
5.0
An exciting story of adventure on the high seas, with Humphrey Van Weyden, an intellectual book critic, shipwrecked after his ferry collides with a ship in San Francisco Bay being picked up by Captain Wolf Larsen on his sealing schooner, Ghost. Larsen is a brutal, violent sailor, hated by all who sail with him but who has a keen intellect and enjoys challenging conversation with Humphrey. After a shipwrecked woman, Maud Brewster is picked up by Ghost, she and Humphrey escape on a sealing boat and are marooned on a desert island where they build shelter and learn how to survive. Ghost runs aground on the island but Wolf Larsen is beset by blinding headaches and soon suffers blindness and strokes as his once strong body is left paralysed. Humphrey and Maud fall in love, repair the ship and set off for Japan where they are rescued by an American ship. Exciting and wonderful. I love a desert island story.
