Home Before Dark
by Riley Sager
I put this on my TBR list because of several recommendations to read it, and I can honestly say I was NOT disappointed! Although this was a suspense, for the first half of the book I truly felt I was reading a horror - I couldn't read too late into the night (but maybe that's just because I'm a bit of a baby). I only calmed down once I reminded myself this isn't non-fiction and there must be a culprit do the mysterious events at Baneberry Hall.
Home Before Dark is a novel following Maggie Holt who, 25 years ago, fled Baneberry Hall with her parents after living there for only three weeks. After her father's recent passing and finding out that she inherited this house, she returns to the house to restore and sell it. Although she was always skeptical of her father's recollection of their time at Baneberry Hall, as told in his nonfiction called House of Horrors, Maggie finds herself experiencing strange occurrences that make her question the truth of her time spent there as a child. Was her father's story truly more fact than fiction?
I had been in a bit of a reading slump before getting to this one (two weeks of no reading for me is definitely a slump), but this was a great way to get back into the groove of things! Riley Sager's writing style does not disappoint. Although I was a bit spooked at first, it was immensely easy to get into this plot, and I was left guessing until the very end!
Definitely a recommended read from me!
