Sula by Toni Morrison
5.0
You don't need me to tell you that Toni Morrison is the Greatest Of All Time, but I have to write this review anyway.
I didn't enjoy Sula's plot quite as much as Beloved, but that's really a minor quibble when I think about the writing. I literally do not know how she does it. Each sentence is silk-smooth, full of gorgeous detail, but never a heavy handed slog. Here you reread sentences to relive them, not to figure out what the hell you just read.
While I don't think that this is as good an entry point to Morrison's work as Beloved or The Bluest Eye, you definitely should not sleep on it.
