One-Eyed Royals
by Cordelia Kingsbridge
I may have been a little underwhelmed by Cash Plays; but One-Eyed Royals was quite the ride! It may be a bit too violent for some; and I must admit I was rather put off by one aspect of the kidnapper’s repertoire – but I’m getting ahead of myself. This installment again sees the Seven of Spades up to their usual shenanigans. This time they’re taking their infatuation with Detective Levi Abrams to new heights. They’ve decided to give him a birthday to remember! Levi unfortunately is having a hard time getting in the festive spirit of the occasion. I mean sure, legit; there is the issue of the SOS inadvertently – and totally accidentally – almost destroying his career and framing him for murder. But still Levi really can’t seem to appreciate the thoughtfulness behind their gift; and for the life of me, I can’t understand how he isn’t pleased as punch. But then, I’ve never had an issue with vigilante style justice – provided the vigilante is not an idiot and actually gets the right person. (No worries here, the SOS seems accomplished; and I wonder if we’ll learn the identity of the killer in the next installment – because I’m totally going with my second guess!! I almost went back to my first, thinking the 2nd was an over obvious red herring; but I sort of think I’m on the right track!).
So once again Domenic is working a PI case which just happens to become hopelessly entangled with Levi’s SOS pursuits. Which is good because it gives Levi and Dom a reason to hang out together (besides occasionally falling into bed) because they are broken up through most of this installment. Domenic is still gambling like a drunkin’ sailor, pawning almost everything he owns and worst of all leaving his dog Rebel home alone (well, okay sometimes with Carlos and Jasmine; but what sort of asshole doesn’t want to be with their dog???) I did not like compulsive gambling Domenic. Levi for his part, was willing to be supportive, he simply wanted Domenic to acknowledge reality and seek help; but Dom kept insisting he had it “all under control”.
The story has lots of twists and turns; so much so that I wasn’t much phased by the relationship angst (and I loathe angst). Levi is really tested in this installment. His past PTSD and anger management issues come at him like a freight train – and is it wrong that I get a kick out of “lost his shit psycho Levi”? At about the 70%-mark things really start heating up and Levi and Domenic join forces for real – and they are a formidable team. Things wrap up on a positive note; Levi and Domenic are getting their collective shit together on all fronts – both relationship-wise and facing their personal demons. But the SOS is still out there – and Levi just insulted them.
