The Big Bath House by Kyo Maclear
5.0
informative

I know The Big Bath House has faced challenges in some libraries due to its portrayal of nudity, so when I came across it, I immediately had to read it—and I ended up loving it as much as I loved Watercress. While neither of these books directly reflects my own culture, both capture a specific sense of family and cultural tradition that transcends any one background and feels universally relatable. The experience of spending time together in the bathhouse, beautifully depicted in this book, resonated with me deeply.

The book’s portrayal of Japanese culture and body positivity is tender and full of joy. It’s a celebration of family, connection, and self-acceptance, and it’s exactly the kind of story that shows why we need diverse and ownvoices books. These stories help us see ourselves and each other, no matter where we come from.

This one is a five-star read for me. I loved it so much that I shared it with my coworkers, and they fell in love with it too. It’s the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading.
