Hmm this was fine and it intrigued me enough to want to read the second book but it’s still a very weak intro to the world/story. The worst part of the book is the romance.
Ophelia’s boyfriend is believed to be missing & dead for the past 2 years. Since the start we’re told that Ophelia and Malakai are in love and are pretty much soulmates, however none of the small interactions we see really showcases that. We’re told they’re in love but not really shown; which makes Ophelia’s inability to move on with her life a bit taxing.
Ophelia then embarks on a journey with her friends to complete a trial and find Malakai.
Now the side characters, I really enjoyed.
Tolek is the golden retriever of the group and would be the perfect love interest here. Honestly the only reason I’ll read book 2 is to see if he and Ophelia get closer together.
Jezebel might be my favorite FMC in the story, she’s a baddie and I can’t wait to see more of her.
Santorina & Cypherion completed the group and I adored them both.
Overall, I enjoyed the story, mostly for the found family. The last 20% made up for the entire beginning and middle part but I still found the world building minimal, & the pacing was inconsistent at times, but it’s what I was expecting.
