This is truly one of my favorite books (and series) oat. It’s the perfect balance of tragedy and hope, reality and science fiction, social critique and characters. It will grip you like nothing else when you’re reading and stay in the back of mind for the rest of your life. Honestly, I can’t really capture the impact it had on pop culture. Despite it being written so recently, it’s being taught in schools and is considered to be a modern classic. The movie adaptations are pretty good too even if it takes out some of its teeth.
If I had to describe the vibe you’ll get while reading, I think nothing encapsulates it as well as how Collins has said that the inspiration for The Hunger Games came to her:
”One night, [she] was channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two "began to blur in this very unsettling way" and the idea for the book was formed.”
P.S. Don’t get scared off by the “dark” tags, I read this in middle school and I was finesjshs, but really it was one of the first things I read that was this intense and I ended up falling in love with it.
