This book has very unique worldbuilding. The majority of the story takes place in a divided city, North versus South, and it was very surprising to discover that this world was a future version of the states. The monsters in this city are not born but are rather created out of tragedy and violence, resulting in a tension between them and the actual humans living in the city. 

There was a bit of a pacing issue, however. The first two sections are rather slow, with the boy infiltrating the enemy's side in an attempt to get close to the enemy's daughter, and the story's speed only picks up after the attempt on the daughter's life. The twist of the boy's brother working together with the enemy was a bit predictable, and I was hoping that the sister would actually be the double agent. 

All in all, the story does wrap up neatly. Aside from the tiny cliffhanger at the end, this book could have been a standalone.
